I cannot explain how excited I am. The most popular mobile phone brands, the company that set the benchmarks, the company that made smartphone and mobile cameras a reality, the company that was synonymous to mobiles, the brand called NOKIA is making a comeback and diehard fans like me can only wait for what’s going to come out of Nokia’s stable.

It’s not exactly THE NOKIA we’ve all known as Finland based company HMD Global is going to manufacture and create new Android based smartphones and tablets under the brand name Nokia. It’s a 10 year brand licensing contract that will allow HMD Global Oy will manufacture new devices under the Nokia moniker and will also be the owner of Nokia’s existing feature phone range that is sold all across the world. All this happened after Microsoft hinted at the demise of Lumia smartphone range, which to be very honest was and is one of the best smartphone range looking at the features and the build quality (after all it is Nokia underneath), but was only hampered by the not so popular Windows Mobile Phone Operating System. The windows phone OS never kicked off the way we all wanted.

While HMD Global Oy (simply HMD or hmd – The Home of Nokia Phones) purchased the rights to use Nokia trademark till 2024, the sales, manufacturing and distribution has been sold to FIH Mobile Limited, which is a subsidiary of Foxxconn (otherwise known as Apple’s largest iPhone manufacturer/supplier. But, hey! I’m not going to talk about these technical things, the amount the deal got finalised at and all that.

I haven’t been an Android fan. Yes, I have used quite a few Android phones and the best ones have been from Google itself (Nexus, not exactly Google) HTC, Motorola and recently One Plus. However, these haven’t been my go to devices, I still love my Nokia Lumia 1020 and Nokia Lumia 1520 and I have started to love my Apple iPhones more since Microsoft ruined the Lumia brand. To be honest, Microsoft could have been a real winner with Lumia, but I don’t manage Microsoft’s smartphone business.

So why am I so excited?

Weird and Bold: I hope the HMD Oy follows the same weird design philosophy we all loved from the Nokia of the past. I mean you’d still love to own a Nokia Leaf phone, right?
Nokia is something I would say Bold when it came to designs, concepts and implementations. Most of don’t know that Nokia has wide gamut of patents and that’s one of the reasons why Nokia didn’t sell its patents to Microsoft. You can bet that HDM Oy’s Nokia devices would be just as much exciting as the amazing Nokia N8, Nokia 808 or the underrated Nokia N9, be crazy as the Nokia Leaf or the Nokia N95 and simple as a Nokia 1100.

The Camera Maestro: Nokia 7650 released in the year 2002 was the very first Nokia that had a build-in camera, but that was just the start. Nokia has always been known for its imaging capabilities. I still use my monster, my Nokia Lumia 1020, which was released three years ago in 2013 and its just as new as the day I got it. Of course you get the point here, Nokia and Camera go hand in hand and the world is waiting to see what the New Nokia is going to do with all the technology they have in store.

Nokia and Android: As I mentioned earlier, I am not an Android fan, but that would change instantly with Nokia bringing a smartphone that runs on Android. I guess that would be equivalent to what Apple iPhone does with its iOS. I know Google has the Pixel smartphone out in the market and despite Pixel being one of the best Android phones I’m not getting one. So, I’m all set for an Android change after all.

Nokia Advertisements: One has to agree with me here that Nokia always had the best musical choices for its advertisements. I’m not going to say much, just watch these advertisements below.

UPDATE

The Nokia 6 is epic and it’s selling like hot cakes, and the Nokia P1 flagship is coming soon globally

HMD very quietly rolled out their first-ever Nokia smartphone (the comeback device for Nokia) the Nokia 6 in China recently and it has received epic response. The Device goes out of stock in minutes and as per the market analysis, it has over 1.5 Million registrations up until now. JD.com, one of the biggest Chinese online retailers has put the Nokia 6 for sale several times, but every time the inventory is loaded, the device goes out of stock in minutes. Well, this has been an amazing response for the brand that Nokia is, however, HMD is planning to bring the Nokia 6 to other markets as well. It will be shortly available in the Philippines and soon in Germany as well. I’m sure as in when HMD or Nokia would make plans for other bigger markets like the USA, Europe, and India. The Nokia 6 comes loaded with a 5.5-inch Full HD 1080P IPS LCD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Powered by an Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 Chipset, the Nokia 6 seems to be an entry level smartphone. Other specifications include:

Dual SIM (NANO)
Android OS V 7.0 Nougat
4GB RAM
64GB Internal Storage
Expandable up to 256GB
16MP f/2.0 FHD Rear Camera with Dual LED Flash
8MP f/2.0 FHD Front Camera
Non-Removable Li-Ion 3000 mAh Battery
Starts at $250 USD or 16,500 INR

The Nokia P1, on the other hand, is going to be a Global Flagship smartphone wearing Nokia’s brand name. Nokia or HMD is going to announce the New Nokia P1 in a few days at Mobile World Congress (the MWC) Barcelona. Not much is known or leaked, but here’s a concept video that should give you a clear idea or maybe prepare you for an upcoming Nokia onslaught. The device in the concept video looks amazingly beautiful and worth being a flagship. It is expected to offer 6GB of RAM with 128GB of onboard storage and runs An0droid OS V7.0 Nougat.
